As municipalities implement wireless internet access for their police departments, they have begun to recognize the future applications of wireless technology. The initial concept of wireless technology solely for police departments and police vehicles has expanded to provide access to information for all the local government’s departments and services. Possibilities ranging from obtaining blueprints for buildings at the click of a button to reading water meters are possible through complete wireless coverage. The number of applications for a municipality through wireless technology is endless.
Possibilities of the Mobile Office Police Vehicle through Wireless Technology
• Records Management System
• Scheduling
• Webmail
• Filtered Internet Access
• Mapped Network Drives
• Network Printers
• GPS
2.4 GHz Wireless Implementation for Police Departments
ISI has provided 2.4 GHz wireless internet access to four Chicago-land municipality police departments of these sizes:
• A 2.7 square mile city with a 5,991 population
• A 2.6 square mile city with a 2,134 population
• A 2.6 square mile city with a 254 population
• A 2.2 square mile city with a 10,255 population
Due to line-of-sight issues, these municipalities are now moving to 900 MHz systems for better coverage and less interference.
900 MHz Wireless Implementation in Planning for Municipalities
Currently, ISI is planning to cover four neighboring municipalities of these sizes with 900 MHz wireless access:
• An 8.6 square mile city with a 55,245 population
• A 4.2 square mile city with a 27,902 population
• A 4.1 square mile city with a 15,335 population
• A 3.2 square mile city with a 20,821 population
Initially, the scope of the project was to mimic previous implementations to provide wireless access for the police department. Because of high T1 costs, the scope was changed to first connect seven municipality buildings and then completely cover the four municipalities with wireless access.
900 MHz Wireless Implementation for Police Department
ISI is currently implementing 900 MHz wireless internet access to one Chicago-land municipality police department of this size:
• A 2.1 square mile city with a 4,060 population
